I wake with the morning chorus. Birds are whistling, chirping and chattering all around. Whiskers is snuggled against my chest and Lumpy is tucked beneath my chin. For a moment I wonder where I am, then it all floods back and I sit up quickly. Today, I must find a way to free my father.

I climb out of the nest I slept in, eager to get to Echo’s and make a plan. I’m about to wake Hero when I spot Silver sitting on the branch platform, staring out across the swamp. I leave Whiskers and Lumpy sleeping in the nest and go to join him.

“Are you all right, Silver?” I ask as I sit down. Last night, in the dark, I didn’t realize how far you could see from up here. But now, in the dawn light, the view is vast and breathtaking. The swamp extends below us, a thick tangle of greenery draped in mist that reaches all the way to the Melancholy Mudflats. The sun is rising on the low-rip side of the island today, making the wet mud shine bright silver.

“I couldn’t sleep, so I’ve been watching the sunrise,” Silver says. His face, lit up by the rising sun, looks tired.

“I’m sorry, Silver. You and Aunty Fleur should be waking in Spark, not here. And you should be getting ready for work at Circadian now, not planning to break into The Keep.”

“We should all be waking up in Spark,” Silver says firmly. “Nobody should be in The Keep. And nobody should be here in the swamp either. Unless they want to be of course.” Silver looks out across the treetops and a small smile lifts the corners of his mouth. “You were right about this place,” he says.

“Wet and muddy?” I raise my feather-eyebrows.

Silver laughs, glancing down at his tunic and trousers, which are streaked with mud. “Yes, but lush and beautiful too. Oh, look!” He points far out to sea, just ripward of where the sun is rising. “There’s Eldovia.”

I follow Silver’s gaze, and when I spot Eldovia’s purple cliffs glinting in the light I think of Nightingale’s plan to go there. “Have you ever thought about leaving Morovia?” I ask.

Silver shakes his head. “Despite everything that’s happened here, my mother and I have never considered it. Even after my father died.” He glances down to the pool below, where huge alligators are slowly drifting amongst the duckweed and horsetails. “Morovia is our home and I love it. Even though it’s a small island, there are always new things to discover. The places, the people and the magic here surprise me every day. What I want, more than anything, is to stay and help make our island a place of kindness so that we can all enjoy it. There must be a way.” Silver glances at me from behind the twists of hair that have fallen over his face and I see determination gleaming in his eyes. “When we go to The Keep, I want to free your father and everyone else too.
